Mexico: LaPaz, up the whole Sea of Cortez, to Puerto Peñasco

This extra-special trip, limited to 16 people, will begin in LaPaz, Mexico, just north of the tip of the Baja. We will travel up the coast, all the way to the very northern end of the Sea of Cortez, Puerto Peñasco (Rocky Point), closely following the path author John Steinbeck took over 70 years ago. (The Log from the Sea of Cortez, his account of his journey, is still in print today.) Imagine ten full days on the sea, basking in the warm sun on the decks of the modern cruise ship Rocio del Mar. The refreshing ocean breezes and rich vistas will renew your spirit. Be prepared for sightings of the vast diversity of life that the Sea of Cortez is known for—and the main reason for Steinbeck’s documented journey. Late spring is the time of the year to witness dolphins being very active, leaping and doing gymnastics above the water. It is also the time of the whale migration. We are apt to see many varieties of both species.

We will:

• Snorkel (Instruction is available upon request.) Some scuba diving may be possible for certified divers.

• Explore secluded islands that strike our fancy,

• Zodiac and kayak away from the ship for close-up viewing and interactions with the dolphins, pilot whales, mantas, whale sharks, sea lions, and other ocean friends.

• make several port stops, possibly Loretto, Santa Rosalia, and Melege, or wherever our hearts pull us to stay the day, or just a few hours to immerse ourselves in the diverse environs and partake in the local culture.

The trip includes: airport shuttles from LaPaz International Airport (LAP) to the boat dock, and from Puerto Peñasco to Sky Harbor airport in Phoenix; double occupancy cabin on the liveaboard w/private bathroom; all meals and snacks; group activities for inner enrichment; port taxes.

Not included: airfare, tips (shuttle and boat crew), meals on land, and snorkel and diving gear.
